We THRIVE-EXPO, finding strength toward a new start.
The National Coalition Against Domestic Abuse defines abuse as a behavior used by an intimate partner to gain and maintain power and control over the other. There exist multiple forms of abuse, such as physical, emotional, sexual, and financial. In 99% of domestic abuse cases, financial abuse is present, impeding survivors from leaving the abuser or causing the survior to return to the abuser. Some forms of financial abuse include forbidding the victim from working; the abuser controls all the money, the victim is not included in investment or bank accounts, etc. Domestic abuse can cause trauma and depression in survivors. Survivors may feel that they are trapped without exit. However, most survivors can regain their strengths and power by exploring their talents and skills.
October is Domestic Abuse Awareness month. One of the most powerful tools to decrease Domestic Violence is for survivors to rediscover the strengths and skills that were dulled and take them away as a result of another exerting control.
We believe in your capacity and perseverance, we believe in the power of networking, and we believe in a new start.
It is our honor to invite you to the “WE THRIVE EXPO” for survivors. The event will take place on October 23 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the YWCA. We intend to create an intentional safe space where survivors can show their talents during our community event. Whatever their talent, this is the space to promote it and start creating pathways towards financial empowerment.
